Just Where is Thiotte, Haiti
Thiotte is a town on top of a mountain in the southeast corner of Haiti. It is just a few miles from the Dominican Republic. This town, and the surrounding communities include about 26,000 people.
When we travel to visit - we fly into Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. We drive about 20 miles (on a blacktop road) to Fond Parisian. In this little town we make a right-hand turn,
From this point we travel 35 miles - which, If all goes well, takes about 3 hours. The “road” is a combination of rock roads, about an hour of driving through riverbed, over two mountains, through the pine forest and to the top of the third mountain where we reach Thiotte.
It is a tough ride.
But the beauty of the country is visible. (perhaps it takes so long because we have to stop and take pictures!!)
Thiotte has a wonderful climate - typically has enough rain, and it is not as hot as Port au Prince. In this climate they are able to grow crops of beans, cabbage, fruit and coffee. It is a poor community - but due to its agricultural bounty - it is better than other places in Haiti.
And in this place - new energy, compassion, entrepreneur, community —— is growing
